A Governess is an educationally qualified individual employed by the parents to educate the children in their private household. Governess typically holds a bachelor’s degree. Generally governesses are not responsible for the general care giving tasks but are primarily focused on education. The most famous Governess role which maybe familiar is that of ‘Mary Poppins’. In contrast to a nanny, a governess concentrated on teaching children, not on meeting their physical needs.
Duties of a Governess:
The role of a governess can be fundamentally important to a family household. Not to be confused with a nanny, a governess is primarily an educator within the home. The role is normally a live-in position and will be largely structured around the needs of the children for whom she is responsible.
The Governess is responsibility for :
- Care, guidance and management of the children
- Develops the children’s independence i.e. Helps them manage personal belongings bedrooms, play areas, school work as well as family, personal and leisure time (not domestic duties)
- Ensures, manages and promotes the children’s health, safety and hygiene
- Manages education (including tutors) communications with school, progress reporting of tutors lessons, extra-curricular activities, leisure activities and play
- Living in with the family in order to be ready to travel when needed, or to ensure the security of children who might not be safe in public school.
- Teaching reading, writing, arithmetic and any other possible subjects.
- Able to travel with the family, while teaching cultures and languages of other countries as the family travels abroad.
- Pro-active role in planning all activities
- Take occasional meals with the children and travel to public places with them to help them learn and understand the subtleties of socialization.
